Our Research Cafés are free, informal events, open to all of our postgraduate research students across the university.
The Research Cafés are held in the Library and take place on a regular basis throughout the academic year. They offer a chance for you to network, share your work, and support one another through the research journey.
Each event includes a theme relevant to your journey, for example Open Access publishing, raising your research profile and understanding copyright and intellectual property; with presentations and Q and As from experts across the university or visiting speakers.
We also encourage you to use the Cafes as an opportunity to present your work in progress to your peers in a friendly, supportive environment, perhaps as a practice run for a more formal conference presentation.
You could also focus on innovative things you are doing with your research beyond academia, such as public engagement activities, ideas for commercialising your research, or collaborations with external partners.
The café format
Presentations at the Research Café are often a practice run for an academic research paper, publication or conference presentation. They are a good opportunity to test yourself out in a friendly environment.
You can also choose to focus on innovative things you are doing with your research beyond academia, such as public engagement activities, ideas for commercialising your research, or collaborations with external partners.
Presentations are limited to 10 minutes each, using a maximum of five slides. There is then a chance for the audience to ask questions and presenters receive written feedback on the style and content of their presentation from the audience after the event.
