Postgraduate Research Experience Survey

Postgraduate Research Experience Survey 2021

What is PRES?

The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) is the only national survey for postgraduate research students' experience. It is run every other year by the university, working in partnership with Advance HE and Jisc. Approximately 115 universities and colleges across the UK take part in the survey.

This year's PRES will launch on Monday 19 April 2021 and closes on Friday 7 May 2021.

Why should I take part?

We want our current and future Postgraduate Researchers to have the best possible experience, working within a supportive environment that helps you prepare for the next stage of your careers. This is your chance to tell the university about your experience as a Postgraduate Researcher here. The survey lets us know what is working well and what's not, helping us make things better. Responses from you help us improve both our current and future support, enabling us to do better for all of our Postgraduate Researchers. Our survey is endorsed by the Guild of Students.

To thank you for taking the time we have 25 vouchers available varying between £20 and £25. Should you complete the survey you will be entered into a prize draw for a voucher of your choice at one of the following stores: Amazon, Deliveroo or Morrisons.

The following are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions from our Postgraduate Researchers.

How do I access the survey?

You will receive an email with a personalised link to the survey itself.

What happens with the results?

Your feedback is extremely important to us. The results of PRES are used to enhance the services and support offered to our Postgraduate Researchers. We can compare your experience against other Postgraduate Researchers across our university and with other institutions to see how we are doing and where we need to improve. Some areas for improvement will be graduate school responsibility, some will be individual schools responsibilities and some may be institutional wide issues.

This year we will be holding open forums to discuss the results and also operating a tracking system with responsibilities for providing responses to feedback.

What does PRES cover?

PRES will ask you about your experience as a Postgraduate Researcher including your supervision, the resources available, the research culture, arrangements for your progression and assessment, the development of your research skills, your professional development, including careers, your wellbeing and your overall experience at the university.

Are my responses confidential?

Yes. The university takes responsibility for ensuring that your personal information is dealt with in a confidential and professional way. The individual responses of each students are used anonymously in all cases and you should ensure that any comments can’t identify you.
